The Invention of Lying

The Invention of Lying (PG-13)--edited

Genre: Comedy
Jake's Rating: 3 stars
Cami's Rating: 2 1/2 stars

My sister brought this over, so we watched it, and although it was a good concept, we felt it wasn't well thought-out. They didn't take certain things quite far enough, and some things too far. So although there were funny parts, it wasn't really worth the time.

Summary: In a world where everyone tells the truth, a man who figures out how to tell a lie gets ahead in life.

Thoughts: So, in this movie, "telling the truth" really means you say every single thing you think. There is no one who just keeps their mouth shut. Also, apparently, you can't make a mistake or be wrong in any way, which doesn't make any kind of sense. So, the situations didn't quite work for me. There were inconsistencies. Sure, movies like this have inconsistencies, but nothing else really made up for them in this one. Plus, you know, I didn't quite appreciate that he makes up God, just to make everyone feel better about dying--it kind of feels like they're saying it's fine for us all to be deceived in our faith if it makes us happy. But that didn't even bug me too bad, because the movie wasn't well-done enough to really make any kind of impact, and it wasn't tight enough to make any real kind of argument. My question is, is there nothing they don't know for certain? There are no guesses, no imaginations, no ideas? It just didn't come together. A funny idea with a few funny moments, but mostly, I said, "meh."
